Tesla Service in Remote Locations

Tesla is shaking up the car industry by doing things regular automakers do not. For example, Tesla has abandoned the traditional dealership and service model. Since Tesla vehicles need less service than gas/diesel vehicles, the same service infrastructure that other automakers have is not needed. Tesla has service centers in most major cities, but what happens when you need Tesla service in remote locations? Well, Tesla may just send a service technician to your doorstep.

I know of a Tesla Model S owner in Prince George, British Columbia who had a malfunctioning rear passenger door handle. The door handle was under warranty. Unfortunately, the closest Tesla Service Center is in Vancouver, an 8.5 hour drive(about 800 km/500 miles.) In addition, charging infrastructure along the highways in Northern B.C.(at this time) is spotty. Tesla’s solution? Fly in one of their Vancouver service technicians to resolve the issue on the owner’s driveway.

Soon after arriving, the Tesla service technician began work. During his visit, the technician also met with another owner to re-program an electronic key card for their vehicle. It may seem expensive to fly a service technician up for the day but I can see how this is more efficient than the expenses of a traditional garage. Not to mention the convenience for the owner. For larger or more complicated repairs, Tesla will sometimes arrive with a service van. I suppose it all depends on the severity of the issue and service constraints.
